Editor,

Trudy Parks sent me the link to the article an article in the Hollister Free Lance called Picking Up the Pieces by Melania Zaharopoulos , and I will be passing it on to several hundred other people via our on-line groups, Parents of Suicides and also Friends & Families of Suicides.

I’d like to commend her for a well-written article. Her focus is on education and the reality of grief and prevention. She included information on how to identify potentially suicidal people and specifics on how to get help in your community.

Amazingly, a lot of suicide reporting is done in a way that sensationalizes it. In sensationalizing suicide, reporters contribute to the stigma associated with suicide. They may also influence vulnerable minds of young people to commit impulsive acts of self-destruction.

This article by Free Lance reporter Melania Zaharopoulos will not do that. She went the extra mile to make sure that any who may read it have the information the need right at the tip of their fingers. This is what I call responsible journalism.
