The grueling workouts have begun for the San Benito High
football squad
Last Season, the San Benito High football team made it all the way to Central Coast Section title game. This season, the Haybalers are looking for nothing less than a return trip to the championship game.
And, even though the team doesn’t take to the field for an actual game until September, it all starts now.
The ‘Balers have been on the field for about a week at this point. Every day after school, the team gathers together as head coach Chris Cameron and his staff begin to lay the groundwork for another successful season.
“(Spring ball) is important in the sense that we’re trying to establish a mindset in our players,” Cameron said. “Granted, we’ve been lifting weights since the week after Christmas, but now we’re getting a chance at some time on the field, working with small groups. It really gives us a chance to build for the season.”
And the team will continue to build towards getting back to the championship game right up until opening night.
School gets out on June 9 and the team immediately will depart for an offensive camp at Reedley College.
The Reedley camp runs through Sunday, June 12. The team will get the following Monday off and then the summer program begins in earnest.
“I look at (spring ball) as a springboard into our summer program and of course, our season,” Cameron said. “We’re getting a lot established here.”
Five days a week throughout the summer, the Haybalers will be on the field starting at six in the morning, perfecting the skills they are learning now. The drills will get tougher and the conditioning more intense.
