I think I’m going to give it another couple of weeks if that’s okay with everybody.

I got up on Sunday morning, made some coffee and sat down in front of the TV to see what was happening in the world outside of the NFL bubble. For the first fifteen minutes or so, all was going according to plan. News, news, news. It was all CNN and MSNBC there for a little while.

And then the football withdrawals kicked in.

My head started pounding with that nasty, coffee-headache hurt. My hands started shaking and my vision was going all blurry.

That is, until I noticed the CNN sports-ticker at the bottom of the screen. Suddenly, I was up on my feet, eyes fully focused and blinking wildly, jaw on the floor as I stared at the idiot box (appropriate here) in disbelief.

Packers over Saints 35-3 in the second quarter?

In an instant, I was a football fan again.

Now, I know that the Saints aren’t world beaters. They’re a below-average team, currently without a home and they’ll be lucky to win four games.

But for a minute there, all was right with the sports world. The Haybaler football team got back on track with a win over San Luis Obispo on Friday, the Yankees were fighting for their playoff lives and the Packers finally picked up their first win of the season, which, in case anybody’s keeping track of the NFC North, basically puts them in the running for the division title.

Don’t worry though, reality set back in on Monday when I got into work and found out that not only did the Packers lose Najeh Davenport for the season with a broken ankle, but that I was firmly in second-to-last place in the Free Lance’s Pigskin Picks contest and only slightly ahead of ‘Flips’ McGee.

Okay, enough whining and flip-flopping about pro football. This week, it’s all about the Prune Bowl between Hollister (2-3) and Gilroy (3-2) on Friday and then Gavilan College against De Anza on Saturday at Hollister’s Andy Hardin Stadium.

Also for your must-see list, the San Benito High boys’ water polo team resumes its league campaign today at the SBHS pool against a tough Live Oak squad. The two teams met in last weekend’s Palo Alto Invitational with the Acorns coming out on top by a final score of 8-3. Coach Tom Agan will no doubt have his team ready to play today against a league rival in a match that would propel Hollister’s record to three games above .500 with a win.
