While the San Benito girls basketball team has started its West Coast Jamboree experience with consecutive losses, head coach Al Rowe believes his team will head home this weekend improved nevertheless.
“This has been a really good experience for the girls,” said Rowe, whose team has bonded in Brentwood by watching other games and taking part in a scavenger hunt together. “Win or lose … we’re really coming together.”
But on the court, San Benito (4-6) hasn’t been getting the results it wants. After falling to Castro Valley in Wednesday’s opening round, the ‘Balers fell to McClymonds 52-46 yesterday.
“We have been right in both games up here,” said Rowe. “We’re right there.”
San Benito will certainly be ready for the most physical teams the Tri-County Athletic League offers when league play begins next week. Once again, the ‘Balers faced a team with superior size and had trouble with McClymonds’ inside presence.
“We really have to muscle up out here,” said Rowe. “We were really weak on the boards. We also need to get our assists up.”
Freshman Vanessa Farias again starred for the ‘Balers, scoring a team-high 18 points. Senior Ashley Patton scored nine points and freshman Symone Baker returned from a concussion on Wednesday to score six points for San Benito.
The ‘Balers take the court for their final Jamboree game at 11:30 today and will face either Colton or Arvin, pending yesterday’s late result.
