San Benito rebounded from a tough league opening loss in style to defeat Gilroy High 7-0 in Gilroy on Monday.

Rose Vandenburg and Jenny Maheu scored three goals each in the blowout. When they weren’t busy scoring goals, they were assisting the other. Both of them had three assists.

Vandenburg scored in the first minute and a half on a pass from Maheu, and it was all San Benito from there on. Both players were pulled out so others could get the chance to play.

Freshman Brittany Huth, normally a defender, scored the other goal for the Balers.

“It could have been a lot worse,” said Mike Schurig. “Rose and Jenny could have put another two or three goals in if they wanted to. But they held back. We had shots from all positions, and everyone got to play.”

The Balers kept the ball on their side most of the game, and Gilroy had trouble bringing it even to midfield. Baler goalie Mary Von Urff had only four saves during the game.

“They gave us a clinic,” said Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez.

San Benito (5-5-2, 1-1 TCAL) will play at North Salinas on Thursday.

“They are very defensive orientated and usually very physical,” Schurig said. “Our goal is to shut everyone out and not let them get inside the 18. We are really going to concentrate on defense to get ready for Live Oak again.”
