The San Benito boys volleyball team was defeated 21-25, 25-22, 9-25, 22-25 by Watsonville in the opening game of the season Tuesday night.

The Haybalers (0-1), who were still missing a couple players from the basketball team, never could get into much rhythm with many hitting errors and service errors.

“They (the Balers) played with a lot of heart,” said Watsonville coach Ron Beneventes, whose team is 1-2. “They were never out of it and made us work for every point. I was never able to relax.”

Peter Prak lead the Balers in kills with 12. Tomas Rebecchi had five, and Mason Dungy had four.

“Peter really stepped up,” said Baler coach Henke Mao. “He is really starting to get his hits down.”

The lead changed hands several times during three of the four games. But in the third game, Watsonville rattled off 15 consecutive points.

Nathan Thome had a string of five serves in the first game to help the Balers build a 16-12 lead. But Watsonville came back to go up 19-16 before Prak and Dungy broke it up with a block.

In the second game, Jake Buzzetta put together some nice serves, including one that went through a Watsonville defender’s hands to put the Balers up 22-21. Thome and Rebecchi combined to block the final point.

In the fourth game, neither team could get more than a three-point advantage.

Alex Gonzales kept several rallies alive for the Balers with his hustle.

“We need to work on passing better and getting better production from our offense,” Mao said. “If we change some stuff and clean up the errors, we should be right there.”
