The San Benito baseball team lost 7-4 to Carlmont on Tuesday.
The Haybalers started off a little shaky, giving up four runs on three straight doubles.
“We had opportunities most of the game and were able to chip away a little at a time,” said coach Derek Barnes. “But we never had the big three- or four-run inning like they did.”
Karson Klauer and Anthony Synegal continue to swing hot bats. Synegal was 2 for 4, and Klauer was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
The Balers scored a run in the first inning after Synegal singled, stole second and was singled in by Klauer.
The Balers scored in the second when Nick Gonzales was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
An inning-ending double play stopped the threat.
Carlmont added three more runs in the fourth inning. The big hit was a two-run single with the bases loaded that knocked starter Breyon Canez out of the game.
Brian Rossi came on in relief and had a strong outing, pitching three scoreless innings.
San Benito added two runs in the fifth inning when Fata was hit by a pitch.
Anthony Synegal singled to right, and the throw to third went out of play to allow Fata to score. Klauer hit a fielder’s choice to score Synegal.
“We hit the ball well again,” Barnes said. “The difference was the opportune hitting. They took advantage of rallies, and at times we did not. We showed a lot of heart in this game. We battled the whole way through.”
The next game is today at 3:15 p.m. at Menlo School. The Balers will have a double header Saturday in Paso Robles.
