The San Benito golf team finished in second place Wednesday behind Gilroy in a league match at Eagle Ridge in Gilroy.

Gilroy had a low score of 209, San Benito scored a 228 and North Salinas had a 260.

Zack Zgragen led the Haybalers with a 40, shooting five pars and four bogeys.

Daniel Isaacson recorded one his best scores with a 43. Chris Shackleton had a 47, and both Chase Graves and Wesley Nelson had a 49. Ryan Wood shot a 58 after shooting a 12 on the first hole.

“We still struggled with the high numbers on the holes,” said Baler coach Mark Tinder. “We need to learn when we encounter a bad hole to finish with the least score then move on to the next hole. We are adding on too many strokes on the holes.”

The Balers participated in a non-competitive match earlier in the week against Pacific Grove on Poppy Hills Golf Course. Zgragen shot a one-over 37 on the course despite breezy condition.

Tinder, who graduated from Pacific Grove, hopes to make the trip an annual event.

The San Benito JV team will compete Monday at Ridgemark against Pacific Grove, and the varsity resumes play after the break.
