The San Benito softball team worked out a 1-0 victory over visiting North Salinas on Tuesday.
The Haybalers (18-5, 6-2 TCAL) once again got on the board early with a run in the first inning as they have done frequently this season.
“I don’t know if it is the other team not being prepared for the first inning or what,” said Haybaler coach Scott Smith. “If Jenny (Maheu) doesn’t get on, it seems Julie (Broyer) does. When we get the top of the order on, we got good speed, and that puts pressure on the other team.”
After Maheu reached base in the first inning, Broyer laid down a bunt, but she was called out after she was ruled to have stepped out of the box.
But Maheu stole second and third and scored on an overthow when the Vikings tried to pick off Hillary Williams at second.
Dani Hernandez picked up the win for the Balers with 12 strikeouts and two hits allowed. She didn’t allow a runner past second base.
North Salinas was able to get a leadoff runner on late in the game, but the Balers were able to get out of the inning without any runs scoring.
When the teams played last time in Salinas, San Benito won 4-0.
“It seems like it is really tough to score in our ball park,” Smith said. “It is hard to hit a triple here because the fielders are playing in and the wind is blowing hard usually.”
San Benito will play at Salinas on Thursday before playing a game against Notre Dame on Monday for a chance at the league title.
