The San Benito baseball team was defeated 6-5 by visiting Salinas on Thursday.
The Haybalers rallied back from a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the third inning.
“Our intensity was good,” said coach Derek Barnes. “I was proud of the effort that the team made. We had some breaks go our way early in the game, but later in the game we made a couple mistakes.”
The Balers moved within 4-3 in the third inning. Seth Hudson and Anthony Synegal walked, and Karson Klauer knocked them in with a double. Jason Sims singled to drive in the third run.
The Balers (7-8, 3-5 TCAL) took the lead with two runs in the fourth inning.
John Corona reached base on an infield hit, and Brett Fulgoni reached after his bunt attempt was misplayed. Seth Hudson laid down a bunt that Salinas overthrew, allowing two runs to score.
Salinas tied the game in sixth and then scored a run in the seventh on a double down the line with one out.
The Balers gave up just four hits. The hit Sims gave up was a bases-load double. Breyon Canez, who came in for Sims, took the loss in relief.
“It is a game that can give us a little momentum and help us turn the tide,” Barnes said. “As far as attitude and mentality-wise, it was our most complete game even though we had a loss.”
The Balers play a non-league game at North County on April 13 after break.
