Sol de Justicia Christian Church will bring the story of Christ to life Saturday evening as the members of the congregation perform a play about Jesus’ life, death and resurrection in Spanish.
It may not be Mel Gibson’s work, but pastor Barbara Lopez, who has seen the blockbuster “The Passion of the Christ,” took a couple tips from the big screen version to give her church play a little more drama.
“It’s not as gory as the movie, but we do use fake blood in the scene when Jesus is carrying the cross to make it seem more real,” she said.
This is the second year the church has put on the play, and Hernan Barragan, 18, who will play Barabbas, said it’s a great way to touch the community.
“We want to help the people in our community, and reach them through the word of God,” he said. “I’m just starting out in the church and I hope the Lord can touch them like he did me.”
City Team Ministries of San Jose will join the church to put on the play. A nonprofit organization serving the poor and homeless in San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Portland, Seattle and Philadelphia, City Team also has partnerships in more than seven other countries. They will bring their efforts of helping those less fortunate to Hollister and in conjunction with Sol de Justicia, provide boxed food for those in need.
Carol Smith, director of family services at City Team San Jose, said she is thrilled about giving support to Sol de Justicia and the community of Hollister.
“Our goal is to help empower the church to do what it can do to help the community,” she said. “The church is there to help the community, so people don’t have to rely on the government for subsides.”
The curtain will go up April 10 at 5 p.m., at 41 Fifth St. Unit C1. Admission is free, and boxes filled with canned foods, chicken and ham will be available to those in need.
Sol de Justicia will work with City Team to put on 10 events this year. In May, they will hold a Mother’s Day brunch, and a Father’s Day celebration will be held in June.
