The San Benito High softball team scored two runs in the first in Salinas on Thursday and cruised to a 5-1 victory against the Cowboys.

San Benito (18-6, 7-2 TCAL) will play its second game against league front-runner Notre Dame for a chance at part of the Tri-County Athletic League title.

Last time the two teams met in Salinas, Notre Dame (22-0, 9-0 TCAL) came the closest it has perhaps all season to its first loss.

San Benito scored first with a run in the third inning, and it wasn’t until the sixth that Notre Dame scored two.

The Balers tied it in the seventh with a run, but the Spirits won in the bottom of the inning with a run.

The teams combined for 15 hits in the game.

San Benito spread it out up and down the lineup with six different players having hits.

Notre Dame has given up seven runs in league this year, while San Benito has given up just one other run in addition to the runs Notre Dame scored.
