On Saturday, May 1, a buzz of excitement could be felt inside the Gavilan College Theater, as 10 lucky contestants vied for the title of Queen in the 2004 Gilroy Garlic Pageant. CMAP was there, with their cameras and a portable studio, catching the competition.

Mistress of Ceremonies Melissa Noto, 2003 Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen, kicked off the festivities, and did a wonderful job as emcee throughout the night. From the Garlic Speech Competition, to the Talent Competition, the evening was filled with memorable performances for cable subscribers to see this Saturday, May 8 at 2 p.m. on Cable Channel 20. Remember: Only cable subscribers get CMAP’s channels, so if you’ve got a gray-looking disk on your roof, you’re going to miss the action! I recommend having a viewing party at a cable subscriber’s house.

Congrats to the 2004 Queen and her court. We certainly look forward to getting some footage of all of you at our live coverage of the Garlic Festival this summer. Look for repeats of the pageant on Cable Channel 20 by checking out our Web site at www.mycmap.org.

I’m sure readers and viewers alike are aware of CMAP’s upcoming auction, May 22 and May 23, from 6-9 p.m. on Cable Channel 20. We’re getting geared up for the event, and wanted to remind you potential bidders of a few things.

Those who want to bid on the 100 plus items we’ve got can do so two ways. The first is a la QVC / KQED style. Call into our studio and make a bid on an item up for grabs that hour. The second is by joining us in the TV studio and bidding live and in person.

How do you know what’s up for bid and at what time? CMAP’s Web site has a complete listing of what we’re auctioning off, its value and what time it’s being auctioned. Surf to the site and slap a bookmark on it, as we’re updating the site through the auction as new items roll on in.

Aside from being a great way to score some true bargains, the CMAP auction is going to be a lot of fun to watch. We’re happy to have co-hosts Pete Keesling, Theresa Kiernan, Kirsten Carr, Craig Gartman, Tony Bruscia and Julianne Palma helping us enthuse you viewers into dialing our live number (which is 408-846-4984, BTW. Program that one on your phone’s memory dial!).

We’re also going to roll in some highlight footage of events CMAP volunteers and staff have covered over the last year, including the Gilroy High School Alumni Piece, Suzuki String Documentary, Cerra Vista Patriotic Program, John Garcia on South Valley Sounds, Shannon Grissom’s “Give Your Walls Some Soul,” and a premiering piece entitled “Fremont Peak,” all about the history of our local observatory.

Be sure to tune in and participate, and thanks in advance for your support!
