Six Haybalers had multiple hits in the game
The San Benito softball team put together its best hitting game of the season in a 9-2 victory at Gilroy on Tuesday.
San Benito worked out 16 hits against the Mustangs, and six Balers had multiple-hit games.
Hillary Williams led the way for the Balers, going 3 for 4 with two singles and a double. Kristen Archuleta, Rachelle Barrientos, JT Temperino, Megan C. Smith and Jenny Maheu all had multiple hits.
“Our girls were just really patient,” said San Benito coach Scott Smith. “Their pitcher threw some really tough pitches. Then she would make a mistake, and we would hit her hard.”
San Benito right fielder Julie Broyer threw three runners out at first base to take away potential hits during the game.
“She is just phenomenal at coming up with the ball cleanly and throwing out to first base,” Smith said. “None of them were even close plays. She charges the ball so hard and gets it out of her glove so quick, she is really tough out there.”
San Benito opened up the game in the fifth inning. The Balers scored single runs in the first and sixth innings.
Maheu and Temperino both tripled in the fifth inning, and Williams and Amy Baxter had doubles.
In the sixth inning, Megan C. Smith led off with a triple and scored on a single by Maheu.
Danielle Hernandez had a no-hitter going into the seventh inning. Up to that time, the only runner that reached was a hit batter.
Kayla Aldridge led off the inning with a high hopper over third base for the Mustangs’ lone hit of the game.
Bria DeLorenzo was hit by a pitch. After another hit batter, a walk and an error game the Mustangs their two runs.
