Eighteen athletes showed up for the first water polo practice on Monday, but some weren’t quite awake.

Players like Zach Bainter and James Schafer were up all night on their trip back from a tournament in Maui, but that didn’t stop them from coming out to the 8 a.m. practice at the San Benito High School pool in what was the first day of practice for most sports.

“It was the first official day of practice, but it sort of seems like it has been ongoing with the summer practice,” said Baler coach Tom Agan. “The turnout was not bad, but since we’re two weeks away from school, a lot of guys are still thinking about vacation.”

He said he expects several more to come out and said he may of may not have to make cuts.

“It is pretty obvious the guys who have been in summer polo and those who haven’t,” Agan said.

Many of the athletes have competed in Morgan Hill this summer. But even though there are usually an average of just five or six athletes who have showed up, Agan said it was not all a bad thing.

“Most of the kids who have been involved with Live Oak’s program have been involved with our program when they can,” Agan said. “It is tough doing both. Just as long as they are playing polo.”

The team played in several informal games against teams from around the area. Several of the younger players were able to get some experience in.

In one of the scrimmages, some of the players even had the chance to compete against water polo moms from Morgan Hill who have formed their own team.

“It made for some interesting refereeing,” Agan said.

Speaking of referees, Agan said the league is in need of referees who have had experience. Anyone interested should contact him or Athletic Director Tod Thatcher.
