Hollister – The San Benito girls water polo team wasted little time jumping on visiting Carmel early Tuesday.
San Benito (14-9, 5-1 TCAL) scored goals almost at will against the Padres in the 16-0 route, the first shutout of the year.
“We’re playing good team defense right now, and that is what is helping us out,” said Haybaler coach Derek Kisling.
JV goalie Nicole Davis replaced Krista Maisonneuve, who is out for the season with an injury. Davis saved all four shots she faced.
“She is starting to get more confidence, which is important for a goalie,” Kisling said. “The way we have been playing defense, we have limited the shots she has had to stop.”
The Haybalers moved the ball well and had several players drive to the goal. Kat Adamek led the way for the Balers with seven goals, and Katie Buzzetta, up from the JV team to replace a player who moved, had three.
Also contributing offensively for the Balers was Jordan Telles with two goals and Yolie Diaz, Tara Damon, Valerie Britton, Natalie Smith with a goal each. The Balers were up 7-0 at the half. Carmel has won just two tournament games this season.
San Benito was coming off of a third-place finish at the Valley Christian Tournament, the last tournament of the year.
The Haybalers, who have won four games in a row, finished 3-1 after losing the first game to Pioneer before coming back to defeat Los Gatos 3-2 for third place.
San Benito will face Live Oak on Oct. 20 in a match that will determine first place.
The Balers will have to find a way to contain Ronnie Gautschi, the leading scorer on the team.
“We can’t let the ball get to her,” Kisling said. “We have to make sure there are three hats around her.”
