San Benito tennis and golf roundup

Hollister – The San Benito girls tennis team came close to upsetting the No. 1 Tri-County League team Salinas Tuesday but lost 5-2 after failing to win a couple close matches.
“It was a lot closer than the score indicates,” said Baler coach Ed Cecena. “It was a good performance. It let the girls know that we can hang with the top team in the league.”
In singles, No. 1 Danielle Burke won 6-3, 6-3 against Salinas’ No. 2 player filling in for the league’s top player who was out with an injury. No. 2 Jamie Houston won 6-4, 6-4. Vanessa Martinez lost 6-4, 6-0. Mary Von Urff won 7-5, lost 3-6 then lost in the tie breaker.
No. 1 doubles Megan Kirk and Alyssa Panecho lost 0-6, won 7-5 but lost the tie breaker.
No. 2 Tracy Hopkins and Kaitlyn O’keefe lost 6-1, 6-2.
And No. Michelle Rovella and Rebecca Williams lost 2-6, 6-7.
Golf
Salinas – The San Benito girls golf team finished second in the five-team Tri-County Athletic League meet at the par-36 front nine of the Salinas Country Club Tuesday.
Gilroy came in first with a 195, San Benito scored a 203, Salinas came in with a 204 and Live Oak scored a 259. Alvarez didn’t have enough players.
San Benito freshman Marissa Gutierrez came in first for the Balers with a 47.
Erica Bardo had a 50, Katie O’Brien had a 52 and Corryn Pacheco rounded off the scoring with a 54.
Ashly Cullumber had a 56, and sophomore Ashley Bushaw had a 65 playing her first match .
Lindsey Shean, of Salinas, came in first overall with a 41.
The next match is Monday at Ridgemark against Monte Vista Christian.
