The Hollister High girls basketball team ventured to Salinas last Friday to get off the schneid in the Tri-County Athletic League.

The Cowboys were rude hosts, nipping the Balers 52-48.

Hollister (14-6, 1-3) has lost three straight games by a total of 10 points.

Even worse, the Balers must now face the consensus league favorite, Notre Dame (18-2, 4-0), Wednesday at Mattson Gym. The Spirits, who were defeated by Pinewood in a non-league game Saturday, are ranked third in the Central Coast Section.

In the loss to the 9th-ranked Cowboys (17-2, 3-1), Gina Caianiello and Trisha Lee each had 15 points for Hollister while Naomi Ruiz had 10. Ruiz also had six boards, all on the defensive end.

Baler center Sarah Groman fouled out and finished the night with three points.

Hollister has already qualified for the CCS playoffs.

JV score: Balers 45, Salinas 38. The Balers (19-2) shot 23 percent from the field and had a total of 23 steals and 23 turnovers.

Jennifer Anaya had nine points, while Jaime Hall and Jaime Flores each had seven. Flores had eight steals. Cortney Almaguer led the Balers in rebounding with 11 boards, while Hall had 10.

“We were aggressive in the first half and let down in the second half,” said Hollister coach Tom Dean. “We’ll have to play both halves against Notre Dame to beat them.”
