Hollister High junior varsity girls basketball coach Tom Dean went out in style.
Dean, who announced his retirement after five years of coaching in the Baler girls hoop program, ended the 2002-03 season with a hard-fought 39-36 victory at Notre Dame Thursday night.
“What a game!” said Dean. “I want to thank everyone at the school for all their help over the years. It has been a wonderful experience and very fulfilling. I can’t say enough about the young ladies I coached. These truly wonderful kids make you realize our future is going to be in wonderful hands. The parents have been very supportive and great help.”
Dean finished his five-year coaching tenure an astounding 121-15.
The JV Balers went a perfect 10-0 against Tri-County Athletic League competion and ended the year 25-2 in league, one of the most successful records in school history.
“Our defense won the game for us,” said Dean. “We made some adjustments on offense at halftime. I spread our guards out wider so it would open up more room for our post players to get the ball and give them a chance to make a move.”
Cortney Almaguer was a force on the boards with 12 rebounds. Almaguer took a late charge to save the day and preserve the win. She also had eight points. Jen Crepeau and Kristina Leal each had seven points for the Balers, with Leal burying a big three-pointer. Ashley Patton, the only freshman on the junior varsity, also had seven points.
