A 15-year-old Los Banos girl died this morning from injuries she sustained in a vehicle accident just before noon Thursday at the intersection of Highway 152 and Frazier Lake Road.
The youth, whose name was not released because of her age, was taken by Cal-Star helicopter to an intensive care unit at San Jose Medical Center for treatment of severe head injuries, the California Highway Patrol said.
The girl, with her grandparents at her bedside, was pronounced dead this morning by medical officials, the CHP confirmed.
The youth was a passenger in a 1991 Honda Civic driven by Dolores Majia, 32, of Los Banos, who was also injured in the accident. Majia was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center where she was treated for moderate injuries, the CHP said. She was admitted to the hospital Thursday and is listed in fair condition, hospital spokesman Matt Schenone said.
The 11:55 a.m. accident happened when Susan Abraham, 60, of Hollister was northbound on Frazier Lake Road in a 2001 Toyota Tundra, the CHP said. Abraham had stopped at the Highway 152 intersection to make a left turn into the westbound lane of the highway.
Abraham was looking to her right as she waited for a tractor-trailer rig to pass before she tried to turn onto the highway. At the same time, Majia and the youth were approaching the intersection from Abraham’s left at about 45 mph, CHP Officer Terry Mayes said.
“As the Honda approached the intersection, Ms. Abraham was still looking to the right and she pulled out, never looking back to the left,” Mayes said.
As Abraham entered the intersection, her Tundra struck the front passenger’s side of Majia’s Honda, the CHP said.
The force of the collision sent both vehicles skidding off the highway and into a row of hedges bordering a small orchard.
Other than suffering the shock of being in an accident, Abraham was not injured.
A long line of fire engines, CHP cruisers, ambulances and other emergency vehicles spread out near the accident scene, shutting down a two-mile section of Pacheco Pass Highway for more than an hour.
Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to have played a role in the accident. “We can’t find anything that would indicate they were a factor,” Mayes said.
Neither driver has been cited and the crash is still under investigation, the CHP said.
