Regardless of my efforts to win friends and influence people with my charm and wit, Mumma told me no matter what, not everyone will agree with me, let alone be my friend – unless of course I had a million bucks, which I did at one time. Then everyone wanted to be my friend.
Except for my family, whenever I had a foolish, hair-brained idea no one wanted to disagree with me, which eventually led to a diminished bank account – proof a fool and his money are soon parted, but that’s another story for the book.
As a weekly columnist, my job is to entertain the reader, tell a story about the human experience and give an opinion, but that’s all it is – an opinion based on the events in my life. And in the course of my life I have been called many a number of things because of my opinions – but “demonic and wicked”? This is a first.
Apparently, last week’s column struck a chord of discontent with one particular citizen who chided me, stating I was siding with “wickedness and evil” to send my son to act as a murdering aggressor against people fighting for their homeland and the form of freedom they choose. I quote from the e-mail: “You are clearly deceived or demonic yourself.”
Self-proclaimed “evil” Free Lance reporter Jed Logan was “shocked and awed” by the implication that he was being demoted from his reign of iniquity.
“I am the evil one,” Logan shouted, while I on the other hand waved a high-five, dismissing him of his duties as I have been promoted to “demonic.” The cause? Freedom of speech.
By declaration of e-mail, the zealot claimed the real war was for my soul, which he had no bones about passing judgment against. I quote again, “You have made your sacrifice for a wicked cause and your rewards will be in kind.” Not very Christian-like from a person who proclaims to be praying for my misguided soul.
I must say, sir, your opinion stands as moot testimony to the fact that, in this country, one is free to be a complete fool. As for my soul, leave that matter to God because it is not your place.
As for the Iraqi people choosing their current form of freedom, I don’t see how holding a gun to someone’s head is considered a choice, but scare tactics. And if I remember my religion classes, Goliath was a bully who terrorized until David murdered him and then God made David king.
True, not everyone will agree with me, and I can accept that because sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me. However, calling me demonic – that really hurt Logan, who remains “embedded” in his car fighting off demons of gas-gouging growth-initiative junkies while trying to avoid the sympathetic stares of his colleagues.
“This can’t be happening,” he shouted one last time before he drove off into the night. “I am the evil one.”
What can I say, my dear black brother, but that you have been beaten by a skinny white girl from Detroit. And only in America can I get away with it.
