The Hollister High softball team travels to Notre Dame today to meet the 18th-ranked team in the U.S. and the eighth-ranked team in California at 4 p.m.
The Spirits (22-2, 8-1 Tri-County Athletic League) are fresh off capturing the 24-team Watsonville Tournament on Saturday and have a string of 19 straight shutouts.
The Balers (15-7, 6-3) were credited with a forfeit victory over Aragon at Watsonville, then were ousted by Gilroy 4-1. All four Mustangs runs were unearned.
“They shouldn’t have scored any runs,” said Baler head coach Scott Smith. “I didn’t like the way we warmed up before the game. I probably should have made some changes. I’m promising a new look in the lineup today and I’m sticking with it the rest of the year.”
The Balers’ lone run Saturday came in the third inning when Rachelle Barrientos, Johni Kiesewetter and Nashia Alvarez strung singles together. Kim Dabo hit a monstrous triple in the fourth inning with one out, but ended up being stranded. Dabo was nursing a sore back or else she might have had the no-fence homer.
Dani Hernandez (9-5) took the loss.
As for the possibility of ending the Spirits’ lengthy scoreless string behind sophomore Kim Reeder, Smith was hopeful.
“I’d like to be the team to end that,” he said.
