“I disagree with Mike Fitzgerald’s commentary on the portable hoops.
I have been one of those people that has constantly called to complain about them. They are portable. Use them, then put them away. Parking them permanently on the sidewalks and in the gutters is not what we should be seeing.
Cars can’t stay parked in the street for over 72 hours before being asked to move or risk being towed. Can’t sweep the street because the hoops are in the way. Some streets have limited parking because of so many people having more than one car now, thus creating one less space for a car to park on the street.
I don’t like to take my evening or morning walks and having to walk in the gutter because some inconsiderate and lazy fool leaves their portable hoop on the sidewalk. But the worst is when these people park their hoops in the middle of the street and don’t want to move when traffic comes. Then they give you a dirty look and yell profanities at you when you pass by.
I don’t like hearing the thumping of the basketball and 11:00 p.m. or at midnight when I am trying to sleep because I have to wake up at 3:00 a.m. I don’t have a problem with people getting their exercise by playing basketball, but move the hoop back into your driveway and out of my way. They should not be permanent fixtures on the public sidewalk or the public streets.
If your ball damages my property while you are playing, then pay for the damages, be responsible. I say that it is about time that the city finally started doing something about this problem. Most of us pay taxes to be able to park our car on the streets and to use the sidewalks.”
