El Teatro Campesino is presenting a new socio/political satire stage performance called “The Messiah Complex,” by Ruben Gonzalez starting Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. in the playhouse in San Juan Bautista.

Gonzalez, whose performance in “Diary of a Mad Mexican” won rave reviews from audiences and critics across the country and parts of Europe.

In “The Messiah Complex,” Gonzalez, who refers to his stage character as the “Mad Mexican,” is clowning around as a servant of the gods.

Sent by the Gods to save the world through, “immaculate reception,” the Mad Mexican finds himself inside the pop culture world of television and propaganda only to find that the voice and concerns of people are nowhere to be heard. Realizing that the “immaculate reception” is truly an “immaculate deception,” the Mad Mexican makes a sharp left turn into the world of radio, where he not only finds the voice of the people, but more importantly, his own.

With Gonzalez’s energetic transitions and Kinan Valdez’s creative direction make certain that this show is bound to get these two in hot water or worse, on some list.

With his typical tongue-in-cheek style of humor, Gonzalez said:

“If you weren’t a believer before the “Messiah Complex,” you won’t be afterwards.”
