Kelsey Jeffries of Hollister survived a big punch in the first round and take an eight-round split decision over Valanna McGee at Centennial Gardens in Bakersfield Friday night.
Jeffries (22-8) had two judges in her corner at 78-74 and 77-75. One judge went with McGee 76-75. It was only the fourth professional fight for McGee (2-2), who is an accomplished kick boxer.
“What won me that fight was my heart and my drive,” said Jeffries. “I don’t even remember the first round, she hit me so hard. I don’t know how I survived.”
In the second round, Jeffries inflicted a hematoma to the head of McGee, who stood inches taller than Jeffries and weight 10 pounds heavier.
“It was one of the toughest fights I’ve ever had,” said Jeffries.
Jeffries’ next fight is on Nov. 6 as she returns to fight another Fight Night at the Tank at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
