As someone who watches local politics, I can’t help but notice
some striking similarities between the flurry of recent vicious
‘letters’ in this column and how former (losing) DA candidate Art
Cantu conducted himself during the campaign last year.
Art’s MO was to run the dirtiest campaign in recent county
history, never missing an opportunity to throw mud at his opponent,
his opponents friends, or the law enforcement associations that
supported his opponent.
Now, an anonymous writer is acting in an eerily similar
fashion.

“In reference to the opinion voiced in Citizens Voice and Hotline regarding the Hollister School District’s technology department:
It is obvious that you have little to no knowledge with regards to how a network operates. Many if not all of the points that you made are either outright wrong or an attempt to play on the fears and concerns of parents. Rule No. 1 in expressing ones opinion is to actually have that opinion based on some sort of factual knowledge…not the perceived knowledge you seem to prefer. Let’s review shall we?
You said: ‘With the daily threat of nearly 60,000 known computer viruses and the continual discovery of new, more complex viruses, one would expect the Hollister School District would have a technology department staffed with trained professionals.’
This is interesting as instead of quoting surveys and actual industry reports you seem to be quoting your figures from a sales pitch on the McAfee website. Unlike you I provide my sources: (http://dispatch.mcafee.com/us/dispatches/ssn_default.asp). And as I will continue to prove you know nothing of the industry, thus making your opinion of what a ‘trained’ technology department would consist of is null and void, mainly due to the fact that you have no idea. Well no idea that is based in what the rest of us like to call reality.
You said: ‘Summer has come and gone, an ideal time to perform routine computer maintenance and upgrades.’
What you failed to mention, and possibly realize, is that such maintenance would have done absolutely positively nothing at all with regards to stopping the current round of viruses. This in and of itself is proof that you are simply ignorant to the situation.
You said: ‘A memo recently sent out states ‘All classroom and lab computers will not be able to go online due to multiple virus infections.’ Due to dumb and dumber incompetence, our schools are suffering, our children are unable to access the computers in the school labs.’
This is either more ignorance on your part or an inflammatory attempt to enrage parents who have no view into the situation and are only concerned with their children. After speaking with a computer supervisor who runs labs within the district, only the access to the Internet will be restricted. Now I know that I went to school and have become very successful without the use of the Internet, and so did you, actually you seem to be a poor example.
You said: ‘Perhaps a board member can suggest installing firewalls and virus protection to them.’
Perhaps a board member can then suggest these mythical firewalls and virus protection programs to Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, and the many, many other Fortune 500 companies that had such systems in place (as does the Hollister School District) and succumbed to the current attacks. The technologies you suggest are not proactive, they are reactive. Stop throwing out ‘key’ words hoping to convince someone you are intelligent. Hooking up your own dial up connection and surfing Yahoo for five minutes does not qualify you to judge people in this field.
I am a network engineer that has worked for Cisco and currently works for the largest security company on the Internet. I have a college degree in this field. I can say without doubt you have no idea what you are talking about. Please save the rest of us your ignorance and let the people who know what they are doing do their job.”
