Sunnyslope School was one of six schools chosen to receive 295 books from Casa de Fruta.

The company announced the six winners Monday. The schools were randomly selected, said Suzan Slater, a partner with Casa de Fruta. A total of 1,770 books will be given away.

“We are so excited,” said Christine White, vice principal at Sunnyslope School. “We had a number of teachers go up there to enter.”

At a Dec. 5 reception, a representative from the school will accept the donation. White said Sunnyslope will use the books in the school’s library.

“They’re Scholastic Books – it’s a popular company that we buy books from ourselves,” White said. “Reading is one of our most important goals.”

Casa de Fruta has a donation and charity department and wanted to help out a local organization, Slater said.

“We asked, ‘who is in the most need of books – who could benefit the most?'” she said. “We wanted to know how we could better serve the community.”

The winning entrant for Sunnyslope was a parent, White said.

“The teachers were very excited. They just wanted to know who won for us. They were like, ‘we never win,'” she said.

The drawing was open to schools in San Benito, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties. The other winners were Barden Elementary in Salinas, Carden Academy in Morgan Hill, Hunt Elementary in Newman, Luigi Aprea Fundamental School in Gilroy and R.M. Miano School in Los Banos.
