The Hollister High girls soccer team finally met up with someone to match its quickness Tuesday when the Balers fell 5-2 to Aragon in the second game of the Burlingame Tournament.
“They were faster and more skilled,” said Balers’ coach Michael Schurig. “Their coach was telling me it’s the best team he’s ever had. I don’t think they’ll lose another game the rest of the tournament. They had a great midfield. They were a well-balanced team.”
Hollister (3-1) has to defeat Hillsdale on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Burlingame High and must also win by a shutout and a three-goal margin in order to make Saturday’s championship round. The top three teams in each bracket and best second place team advance to Saturday’s action.
The Dons (3-0) scored a goal in the first three minutes on a corner, then the Balers tied it up on a goal by Jenny Maheu on an assist from Amy Baxter.
Trailing 3-1 at the half, the Balers reached within a goal when Rose Vandenberg capitalized on a penalty kick. The Dons scored two goals in the final 15 minutes.
“We played hard,” said Schurig. “Now we know what we need to work on.”
Schurig is staging a competition at goalie with senior Chanin-Rae Maka and sophomore Mary VonUrff each playing a half.
“We’ll see how it plays out,” said Schurig. “We need to determine our goalie in preseason.”
The Balers have road matches at Alvarez and Monterey before returning home Dec. 9 against Monte Vista Christian.
