Hollister High took the 13-mile trip to Anzar High for an intraleague girls soccer match Wednesday and prevailed 13-0 – a goal a mile.

It was the first match of the season for both teams.

“Anzar played real well,” said Baler coach Michael Schurig. “Their goalie made some great saves in the first half. Their players had a good attitude the whole match. For us, it was good we could see a lot of players play that we weren’t sure about.”

The Balers led at the half just 4-0.

Jennifer Vandenberg had seven goals for the match, three in the first half. Jenny Maheu ended up with five goals, four in the second half. Vanessa Gowett tallied the other goal for the Balers.

“We were in good shape and that’s what happened in the second half,” said Schurig. “They ran out of steam. They’re young and have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores.”

Schurig praised freshman Nereyda Garcia and senior Allison Filice for fine play. Garcia had an assist, while Julie Broyer had two assists.

“Nereyda played well in the midfield and Allison did an excellent job on defense,” said Schurig.

The Balers host Alisal in another non-league contest Friday at 3:30 p.m.
