Della Jack, a Hollister resident for 45 years, will celebrate her 100th birthday Sept. 2, 2014. She was born Sept. 2, 1914 in Amorita, Okla.
What is the best thing about living to be 100?: To be able to watch my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up, remembering my loving and devoted husband and all we shared growing up and through 50 years of marriage before his death in 1991, to have many devoted longtime friends, and still be living in my own home.
How is today different from when you were growing up?: I grew up on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma, walked or rode a horse to a one-room schoolhouse. During World War II, I worked at Beech Aircraft and then taught school for more than 20 years. Seventeen Presidents later, technology has surpassed many visions and dreams. God and I have come far together.
What is the secret to longevity?: Faith in God and the love of family who are always there for me. Growing up in a loving, hardworking family. Teaching and being inspired by so many young people. Having good, supportive Christian friends. My family might say I’m also just a very teeny bit stubborn…
One of your favorite memories: My husband coming home from WWII in the Aleutians, from Korea when we went to join him and got off the plane in the Philippine Islands, when he came home from Vietnam. Many sunsets we shared. Also, when each of my children was born … there are many good memories.
Any additional details: All three of my children will be with me: Paula, from Upper Peninsula in Michigan; Max and Gary (plus his three children Joe, Charlie and Natalie), all from Austin, Texas. It will be a very special sharing for all of us.
