El Teatro Campesino’s crowd-pleasing pageant of the Mayan creation story, “Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven,” returns, showing at 3 p.m. Aug. 23-24, 30-31 and Sept. 1 at the San Juan Soccer Field, 100 Nyland Drive in San Juan Bautista. And for the first time, the presentation will be shown in Hollister at 3 p.m. Sept. 6-7 at Dunne Park.
Adapted from the “Popol Vuh,” the sacred creation book of the Quiché Maya, “Heart of Heaven” recounts the creation of the universe and the earth, staged as a pageant with large-scale puppets, original live music, colorful costumes and spirited movement.
“Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven” is narrated in three languages: Spanish, English and Quiché—the Mayan language embodying the oral tradition that kept Popol Vuh alive for centuries. The performances run on clean solar and wind energy provided by San Juan Bautista’s own Cal-Power Inc. Alternative Energy Products.
For nearly 50 years, El Teatro Campesino has celebrated the rich cultures of the Americas. Join in the festive, free event in the historic San Benito County towns of San Juan Bautista and Hollister—perfect summer destinations for shopping, dining and world-class entertainment.
