Local cadets take first in competition: The Chesty Puller BN, United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a naval youth program which covers the Monterey Bay area, recently placed first in their division at the annual Seamanship Challenge held at Coast Guard Island in Alameda. The unit competed in teams of four, and earned third place for Line Heaving; second place in the Obstacle Course; First place for Close Order Drill; First place in Damage Control; and First place in the Stretcher Relay. This gave them an overall first place in the Combined Units Division.
Competing for the unit were PO2 Elisabeth Wayne, PO2 Alex Wayne (Aptos); SA Cameron Mendez (Santa Cruz ); SA Ian Abinsay, SN Hanh Phan (Gilroy); LC2 Aaron LeQuang, LC2 Astin LeQuang, SN Kevin Antolin (Morgan Hill); SA James Hopham and SA Ann Nguyen (San José). The unit is commanded by LCDR Tony Saucedo, NSCC, supported by LT Richard Villegas, LTjg Stevin Masuda and INST Ha-Thanh Ho.
The United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a maritime oriented, youth leadership program, sponsored by the Navy League of the United States, and works with all branches of the military, in particular the United States Navy, Coast Guard and Marine Corps.
