For most students at schools in Hollister, San Juan Bautista and Aromas, it’s classes as usual despite the rain. At Southside School, however, classes are canceled for Friday.
Administrators at the San Benito High School District met, though, to consider halting classes because of a large storm that hit the county Thursday afternoon.
“We did meet. The administration—they talked about every scenario that could happen and we felt safe enough to stay open Thursday and Friday,” said Trish Cooper, the administrative assistant for the superintendent.
In the Aromas-San Juan Unified School District, the superintendent told board trustees that he had talked with administrators about procedures if they had to close schools but “there were no intentions of closing,” said Janet Castro, the executive assistant at the district office.
“We did not hold a conversation regarding closing school,” Castro said. “However, at the board meeting last night, Dr. Zepeda in his superintendent report did of course mention the storm.”
At the Hollister School District, the consensus was similar: classes as usual Thursday and Friday unless winds became so strong that it was dangerous. The district does its best to hold school days as long as the environment is safe for kids, said Superintendent Gary McIntire.
“I come from snow country,” McIntire said with a laugh. “It’s got to get pretty bad.”
Southside School District announced Friday’s cancellation “due to road closures and safety concerns,” according to the school website.
