Despite 21 points from Hyram Miskin, the Balers lost their first league game Wednesday, falling to Seaside 60-57.
The Balers led a slim halftime lead, but they couldn’t hang on as Seaside’s Ronald Turner finished with a game-high 22 points in the victory.
In the loss, San Benito recieved strong games from Jacob Tonascia – who scored 15 points – and Miskin but it wasn’t enough. Robert Henderson finished with eight points and Michael Breen scored seven.
The loss drops the Balers to 9-1 inside the Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division with two games left to play. They hold a one game lead over Palma and Seaside for the league title.
The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Balers.
The Balers host Palma at 7 p.m. Friday.
SBHS Wrestling
In the final dual meet of the season, the Balers fell to Gilroy High 46-27 on Wednesday.
It was a much better showing for the Balers after only winning one match a year ago, head coach Brian DeCarli said.
Only one Baler finished with a pin – Eric Loredo at 108 pounds – and five total victories.
Tim Castillo, though, had the best showing for the Balers. Despite a bloodied nose, Castillo earned a 2-1 victory over Mustangs’ Matt Penyascek in the 184 pound division.
The Balers will compete in the MBL finals on Feb. 16.
SBHS girls basketball
The girls basketball team won its second consecutive league game Thursday, further solidifying its third place standings in the league.
Using a strong second half – where the Balers outscored Notre Dame 17-8 – San Benito came away with a 34-26 victory over the Spirits. With the win, San Benito is now 7-4 inside the MBL and 13-10 overall.
The Balers close their regular season Thursday at 7 p.m.
SBHS soccer
With goals by Berenice Bribiesca and Austin Perez, the girls soccer team stayed undefeated in league play Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over Pajaro Valley.
The win keeps the Balers a half game behind Gilroy at 6-0-3. San Benito closes its season with a road game against Watsonville on Wednesday and a home game against Salinas on Friday.
The boys soccer team scored goals in both the first and second halves to escape with a 2-1 victory over Monterey on Wednesday. San Benito is now 5-3-2 in league play.
They play their final home game at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.
AHS soccer
The girls soccer team closed its season Thursday with a 1-1 tie to York. With the tie, the Hawks finished the season with a 7-1-2 record.
The boys team finished its season with a bang, outscoring Trinity Christian 10-1. The win gives the Hawks a 7-8-1 record only one year removed from a two-win season.
