Property tax installment due Wednesday

HOLLISTER – Property owners have until at 5 p.m. Wednesday to pay the second installment of secured property taxes without penalty. Property owners can pay with a debit or credit card or e-check online at www.cosb.us/tax or by phone to 1-855-338-6302. They can also pay by mail to: Mary Lou Andrade, San Benito County Tax Collector, 440 Fifth St. Courthouse Room 107, Hollister, CA 95023-3894. Property owners may also pay in person at the Tax Collector’s officer, 440 Fifth St., Room 107 from 9 a.m. to noon or 1 to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau two events planned for the coming weeks. The chamber’s monthly Business After Hours is set for 5:30 p.m. April 10 at A Tool Shed Equipment, 2610 San Juan Road. Then the Lunch with Leaders is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 17 at Ridgemark Golf & Country Club, where the guest speaker will be San Juan Bautista City Manager Roger Grimsley. Benefit plant sale

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association will hold a benefit plant sale April 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the 400 block of San Benito St. The sale will include annuals, herbs, bedding plants and mixed pots. All proceeds will benefit the HDA’s community events and programs. Details: 636-8406.

Backpack project collections begin

HOLLISTER – The Women’s Club of Hollister is accepting donations for its backpack project. The project supplies backpacks full of needed supplies to children from infants to 17 years who are taken from their homes and placed in alternative living conditions through no fault of their own. The backpacks are filled with age and gender specific basic toiletries, school supplies, a stuffed animal and a handmade blanket. The backpacks have been donated to San Benito County Child Protective Services, the Emmaus House women’s shelter, Chamberlain’s Children Center and the San Benito County Chapter of the Kinship Center. Residents can sponsor a backpack for $40, collect items for the backpacks or send a monetary donation to : Women’s Club of Hollister, PO Box 818, Hollister, CA, 95024-0818. 4-H Pancake breakfast

HOLLISTER – San Benito County 4-H will host a pancake breakfast April 21, from 7 a.m. to noon at Bolado Park. The meal is $5 per person and includes pancakes, eggs, sausage, potatoes, milk and juice. The annual breakfast is hosted by all the 4-H groups in the county and will benefit programs. Details: 524-1005.

Pizza in the Grove

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Downtown Association will host its Pizza in the Grove fundraiser May 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Leal Vineyards, 300 Maranatha Drive. Tickets are $25 per person and include all-you-can eat wood-fired pizza, Cesar salad, water, ice tea and music by Smooth Grove. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. ‘Treasure Island’

HOLLISTER – San Benito Stage Company presents its spring children’s musical, “Treasure Island,” April 19, 20, 26, 27, May 3 and 4, at 7 p.m. and April 21 and 28, at 2 p.m., at the Granada Theater, 336 Fifth St., in Hollister. MACE Cinco De Mayo banquet

HOLLISTER – The Mexican-American Committee on Education of San Benito County will hold its 43 annual Cinco De Mayo Scholarship Banquet May 4 at San Juan Oaks Golf Club, in Hollister. Tickets are $50 person with table reservations of eight people encouraged. No tickets will be sold at the door. The event features a dinner, honorary recognition and music. This year Jim Caffiero, a counselor at San Benito High School, who is retiring after 27 years of service, will be honored for his commitment to helping students go to college. District 12 art competition

HOLLISTER – State Senator Anthony Canella is hosting a contemporary art competition for residents who live in the 12th senate district. Submissions must be original artwork that is no larger than 3-foot by 5-foot. Oil paintings, works on paper, weavings, wall hangings and sculptures will be accepted, with a biography of the artists required with the submission. The deadline to submit a piece for consideration is April 25. The pieces will be on display for about 18 months as part of the Senate California Contemporary Art Collection. Chamberlain’s work day

HOLLISTER – Chamberlain’s Children Center will host a work day to make improvements to the school on April 13, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Projects include: weeding, planting, irrigation systems, creating a pizza garden, building c0mpost bins, assembling a brick and mortar outdoor bread and pizza oven, baseball field maintenance, and fixing potholes. AARP tax aide offered through April 10

HOLLISTER – The AARP Tax-Aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation assistance to taxpayers of low-to-middle income, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Volunteers will be available to assist residents on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., thru April 10, at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St. Please call ahead to make an appointment. Participants should bring their photo identification and Social Security cards or ITIN documents for each individual on their return, along with any tax documents they have received in the mail, last year’s return, and all relevant information on income and expenses. HOLLISTER – The San Benito district Cub and Boy Scouts will host a recruiting day April 13, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Sunnyslope Medical Center, at the corner of Sunnyslope and Memorial Drive. Cub Scouts troops are open to boys in first through fifth grade while Boy Scouts is open to boys 11 to 18 years old. HOLLISTER – Visit Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area April 13 for the second annual four-wheel drive Geocache Bash. ‘Summertime with Oriana’

HOLLISTER – The Oriana Chorale will kick off the summer with three concerts in its “Summertime with Oriana” series. Get rid of bulky items

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Integrated Waste Management Regional Agency will accept two bulky items per household free of charge on select dates this year. Suggested items for disposal include furniture, appliances, tires or other items. To participate, residents must bring a driver license or ID that identifies them as a resident of San Benito County or its incorporated cities. The bulky item collections dates for 2013 are June 29 and 30, Sept. 28 and 29, and Dec. 28 and 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at John Smith Landfill, 2650 John Smith Road.
