The Hollister School District Board of Trustees last week unanimously approved three items related to campus security following complaints about the environment at Gabilan Hills Elementary School.
Those three items included resolutions to install fencing at three schools, tighten the visitors policy and install access control equipment at the Hollister Dual Language Academy.
The items are on the board’s agenda a month after hearing from the League of United Latin American Citizens and some parents who were upset about the hiring of a new principal at Gabilan Hills Elementary School along with related security issues on the campus. One of the most vocal parents noted witnessing alleged behavioral issues during daily lunchtime visits to the campus to spend time with her daughter – which spurred talk on minimizing regular visitors to the school.
The items on the agenda would include spending $7,648 to install a camera, intercom and locking mechanism located at the main entrance to the dual language academy; spending $23,000 on fencing at Sunnyslope, Gabilan Hills and the HDLA schools for areas that are open from the outside; and restricting access for visitors to campuses.
