Canisters of marijuana are marked for medical use only at Purple Cross Rx in 2010. The dispensary shut down after the county outlawed the operations.

Hollister council members took a big step Monday toward potentially approving a new medicinal marijuana law that would regulate and allow cultivation, dispensing and manufacturing processes in the city.
Council members in a 4-0 vote showed support for moving ahead on further research for a local Medicinal Marijuana Administrative Ordinance.
The vote Monday will allow the city manager to put out a request for proposals from firms that could analyze prospective city costs from such a local law before council members are set to consider the ordinance for final adoption Aug. 1.
The city’s move comes in response to the state Legislature last fall approving a trio of bills that regulate the industry. Hollister has banned dispensaries by local ordinance since early 2010.
