Nearly 100 San Benito High School employees are alumni, according to a recent survey conducted by the school district’s Human Resources Department.
In total, 96 current high school staff graduated from the school within the past half-century, from counseling clerk Hermie Ybarra and biology teacher Bill Johnson (1969 graduates) to 2014 alumna Bailey Brooks.
There are 54 classified employees and 38 teachers or specialists who were once students on campus, including Principal Adrian Ramirez, Director of Educational Services Elaine Klauer, Activities Director Catalina Lemos and Director of Technology John Frusetta.
“It’s important to point out that the ‘Once A Baler, Always a Baler’ saying is more than just a slogan,”according to a district staff report.
Alumni are clerks, mechanics, bus drivers, caseworkers, human resource specialists and coaches.
To honor and connect all alumni, SBHS staff is creating an alumni network that will host special events on campus and in the community, a newsletter and opportunities to support academic, co-curricular and extracurricular activities, according to staff.
More details will follow as the school year continues, but plans are underway for special events in the spring, including an alumni barbecue and campus tour and a potential golf tournament.
“We are excited about connecting (or reconnecting) our loyal alumni to their alma mater,” the announcement states. “For more than a century, San Benito High School has been an integral part of the community, through education, community service, clubs, organizations, athletics and more.”
Trustees pledge $10,000 to support Robotics
At a Sept. 11 meeting, the San Benito High School Board of Trustees committed to provide $10,000 to the school’s robotics team, led by science teacher Thien Vu-Nguyen.
The team plans to use some of the funding to compete in at least two regional competitions this school year. The team is scheduled to participate in CalGames 2018 on Oct. 5-6 at Woodside High School.
