On Thursday evening, in the small town of Kirkwood, Mo., five
public servants were fatally shot and two others wounded. Among the

On the map, Kirkwood is a long way from here, but it’s not very different from thousands of other small American communities that have hometown governments including ours. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the people of Kirkwood and especially to the victims their friends and families.
While I’m often a harsh critic of the Hollister’s City Council and the County Board of Supervisors and will continue to be so, it’s important to remember that all politicians, police, firefighters and other staff are performing vital public services, and we could not have our cherished local government without them.
It is a sad state of affairs when they and the public must also deal with threats or acts of violence.
Those who are out of control or who have anger management problems rarely recognize the symptoms in themselves. If you know of someone like that get them some immediate help; by doing so you may prevent a family or community tragedy.
