Hollister wins three of four over the weekend;
The Hollister Little League 11/12 All-Star teams got off to rousing starts in the District 9 tournament over the weekend as Hollister American beat King City 8-2 and Hollister National crushed Greenfield 20-0 in four innings on Saturday at Prunedale’s Manzanita Park.

On Sunday, Hollister American won its second game in as many days, defeating Salinas American 7-1. The Nationals, however, lost to Salinas Atlantic 3-1 but remain alive in the double elimination tournament.

Kevin Salvas started on the mound for Hollister American on Saturday and surrendered just one hit in five innings to go along with nine strikeouts in the victory. Enrique Lopez pitched the sixth and struck out two of three King City batters to secure the win.

Marcus Sabbatte and Lopez each homered for Hollister in the game and Adrian Medina singled, doubled, and scored two runs.

Hollister American was even more dominant on Sunday as Medina struck out 15 Salinas American batters and gave up just one hit in the complete-game victory. Jacob Tonascia, Mark Nakata and Walter Irish contributed hits along with Medina, Sabbatte and Lopez.

Hollister American, managed by Steve Gessell of the Hollister Little League Orioles, will face Soledad at Salinas Atlantic’s field at 10am Saturday.

Albert King’s National League team had no trouble dispatching Greenfield in a game shortened by the 15-run mercy rule on Saturday. Hollister pounded out 21 hits, and four pitchers combined to throw a perfect game in first-round action.

Andrew Donati hit two home runs and drove in four runs and Tyller Smith and Adrian Soto each hit a home run in the win.

Smith’s home run sailed through the windshield of Hollister Little League President Joe Tonascia.

“I turned around and said ‘if it hits anything it is going to be my truck.’ And sure enough it was,” Tonascia said.

Ryan Jacob, Emmett King, Adrian Soto and Skyler King each pitched an inning and didn’t allow a Greenfield runner to reach base.

In Game 2, starting pitcher Smith hit a deep home run to right centerfield to put Hollister National up 1-0 over Salinas American after two innings. Salinas answered with a solo home run of its own in the top of the third and pushed across two more runs that inning to stretch the lead to 3-1. Pitchers Emmett King and Matt Vallejo shut Salinas down the rest of the way, but Hollister didn’t score again as it was knocked to the loser’s bracket and a 5:30pm matchup tonight with North County at Salinas-American’s field.

Other all-star action: Hollister Little League is hosting the early rounds of the 9/10-year-old District 9 tournament that started Wednesday at Veteran’s Memorial Park. The tournament moves to Salinas next week. Hollister National’s “B” team faced Ferrasci of Salinas. The Hollister National “A” team played King City, and Hollister American “B” team opened against Soledad. Hollister American “A” opens the double-elimination tournament today against King City at 7:30pm on Field 2.

Nick Chicoine hit a pair of home runs to help the Hollister American 11 American team to win its first two games – against Gonzales 12-2 and against North County at North County 3-2. On Wednesday, Hollister was down 2-0 before Chicoine hit a two-run shot to tie the game. He set the winning run that Trevor Buller drove in. With the National team also winning both games, the American and National could face each other in the final rounds.
