Each year, rotary clubs around the world hold a speech contest for local high school students. Emily Nelson, of Anzar High School, won the area competition for Rotary Clubs of Gilroy, Hollister, Morgan Hill and San Juan Bautista earlier this month and will advance to compete against students from throughout the Bay Area.
The goals of the speech contest are to increase the student’s awareness of the importance of being able to speak effectively before a group, to increase public knowledge of what Rotary does locally and throughout the world, to teach young people the value of volunteer service, and to provide all high school students an opportunity to learn the value of fair competition. Cash prizes are awarded with no strings attached, but Rotary hopes that the award will be used to further the student’s education.
