The Anzar High volleyball team was defeated in three game games by visiting Carmel 16-25, 18-25, 22-25.

The Hawks (13-16, 8-7 MTAL) got better as the match went along and never gave up, but the No. 2 MTAL team was too much for the hosts.

“We got a lot of heart and hustle,” said coach coach Chris Wardlaw. “We just don’t have the ball control. I’m not too unhappy with the loss. They started to come together a little in the second and third games, but it seemed like they just weren’t jelling.”

The Hawks, who don’t play any other Division 5 teams, have a good chance to get into the playoffs with an at-large berth. Anzar will wrap up its season Wednesday at Pacific Grove.

In the third game, the Hawks were down 0-5 and were forced to call a timeout. Treva Crocker, who had 11 kills and four digs, broke it up with a hard smash to get the Hawks on the board.

Emily Delisseguess served up four straight points. And Anzar was able to take a 9-8 lead after Carmel went under the net.

But the lead was short lived. Carmel went up 19-13, but Anzar closed with 21-19.

Leanna Hardy came up with several nice hits for the Hawks. She had three kills and eight digs. Justine Wiley also had eight digs in the game.
