A 1,200-gallon tank containing diluted sulfuric acid toppled over and spilled at a Murphy Road strawberry field Saturday morning, causing second-degree burns to a field worker who came in contact with the corrosive chemical, Calfire said.

The spill was reported about 10:30 a.m. and appears to have been caused by saturated ground, Battalion Chief Cliff Williams said.

The worker was airlifted to a trauma hospital, Williams said.

It’s unclear how many gallons spilled, he said.

The field owner called a professional cleanup crew to the field, which is about halfway between the river and San Juan Road, he said.

Williams said the diluted acid was used to mix with irrigation water to adjust its PH.
