The Hollister High girls basketball team fell in its season opener, losing to Watsonville Saturday 40-29 at Mattson Gym.

“We weren’t on the same page on offense,” said the Balers’ Naomi Ruiz. “We couldn’t pass the ball inside or run our plays right.”

Hollister (0-1) held an 8-point lead at one point in the game but wilted under the ‘Catz’ full-court pressure.

The Baler JVs destroyed Watsonville 57-11 in a nice prep debut for freshman Ashley Patton, who had 17 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks.

Jen Anaya showed good quickness with five steals. Johni Kiesewetter had five rebounds and three assists while Jamie Flores had 12 points for Hollister (1-0).

“For the first game, we moved the ball well and pushed it up the court and pressed very well,” said Baler coach Tom Dean. “We have a lot of speed and depth this year. I substituted and we didn’t drop off.”

The Baler freshmen also won.
