The Hollister High boys golf team passed its first test of the season with an A-plus. More matches like Thursday’s Tri-County Athletic League match with Salinas and Palma at Ridgemark Golf Club and the Balers will be counting honor points.
The Balers’ team low of 150 skonked the Cowboys and Chieftains, who both carded a team 166.
Ian Hudson had a sizzling 33 on the par-37 Diablo Course with four birdies and no bogies.
“Ian showed why he’s one of the best players in the league,” said Baler head coach Mitch Thomas. “he was tough out there today.”
John Dempsey carded a one-over par 38, while Matt Lopez (39) and Zach Zgragen (40) weren’t far behind. The Balers’ discarded scores from Matt Vigilante and Derek Lee, who both had 42, would have been more than acceptable on most days.
The Balers are at Salinas Country Club next Tuesday for another Tri-T-CAL meet against North Salinas and Live Oak. Coincidentally it is the first day of work for Thomas at his new employer, Salinas Country Club. Thomas will serve as an assistant pro there after a long stint as an assistant at Ridgemark Golf Club. Thomas is a Baler alum of 1975.
