More than 200 family members crowded into the San Benito High School cafeteria Wednesday to honor Division Chair Award and Baler Code Award winners. Thirty-seven students received recognition from the school’s divisions while five students and five staff members were given awards for illustrating the Baler Code.
“It’s always a pleasure to recognize students and faculty for their achievements,” said Interim Principal Duane Morgan. “Sometimes, we don’t say ‘good job’ or ‘atta boy’ enough – this is our chance.”
The awards are handed out each semester. This year, fall semester ended before winter break, shortening the semester, Superintendent Jean Burns Slater noted.
“This semester was really short. You guys shined really well in your achievements in a short amount of time,” she said.
The student members of the Student Advisory Committee select five students and five staff members who best represent the qualities of the Baler Code – “A Baler is respectful, responsible, honest, civil, tolerant, caring, courteous and courageous.”
For the first semester, students earning the honor are Catalina Garcia, Travis Haninger, Ehren Headley, Logan Krazter and Feifei Ling. Teachers receiving the award are Herb Bocksnick, Doug Keck, Chuck Schallhorn, Wes Standen and Amy Tagliaferri.
