The San Benito boys basketball team lost their first-round opening game to Gunn High 48-38 Thursday night at the 26th Annual Seascape Classic in Aptos.

Although complete statistics were not provided at publication, San Benito head coach John Becerra noted the play of Gunn’s Kyle Perricone, who dropped 26 points on the Haybalers, more than half of Gunn’s offensive production on Thursday.

“They’re a good team,” Becerra said. “Gunn is the best team we’ve faced so far, no question about it.”

Jason Canchola led the Haybalers with 11 points. San Benito falls to 1-2 on the season.

Despite being a disappointing loss, though, Becerra felt Thursday’s game against Gunn was encouraging, and even said that Thursday’s performance would have earned the ‘Balers a win against Pacific Grove last Monday.

San Benito lost to the Breakers, 53-52.

“We improved, especially defensively,” Becerra said. “I thought we hit the boards a lot harder than Monday, and we were a little more aggressive, more physical inside. We sprinted the court better than on Monday.”

On Friday, San Benito will return to Aptos to battle Gilroy High at 3:30 p.m.

The Mustangs (2-1) lost to Pioneer 57-44 Thursday at the Seascape Classic after shooting 4 of 19 from the free throw line.
