The Hollister High boys basketball team got back to reality Thursday night in the semifinals of the Overfelt Invitational Tournament.
One night after causing a stir with a 104-point win, the Balers were on the respectable short end of a 51-41 loss to talented Newark Memorial.
“They had more athletes than we had,” said Kaplansky. “We played great to stay with them.”
A two-point second quarter hurt the Balers (2-1), who trailed at the half by 29-10. The Balers came out strong in the third period, outscoring Newark Memorial 17-10 in that third frame.
Senior guard Broc Sondgroth led the charge with 16 points, all in the second half. Sondgroth hit five three-pointers. Kevin Zanella chipped in seven, while Kyle Sharp had six points.
The Balers made front page news and even made some local sports talk shows after their 110-6 walk over Downtown College Prep in the tournament’s opening game. Kaplansky was called late Wednesday evening for an interview.
Kaplansky felt vindicated of any wrongdoing when Mt. Pleasant bested the Lobos 98-10 in another tournament game on Thursday.
The Balers play Overfelt tonight in the third place game at 6:30 p.m.
