Hollister – Despite not shooting scores as low as coach Andy Parra would’ve liked, the San Benito boys golf team got in the win column Thursday by edging Sobrato 220-229 at Ridgemark Golf and Country Club.

“We squeezed out the victory,” Parra said.

The Bulldogs’ Gary Leung carded the top score of the day with a two-over 38, but three Haybalers shot in the low 40s to produce the victory.

Josh Greenwood had the top score for San Benito, shooting a five-over 41. Daryl Aton and Joey Amaral both carded 43s.

“Some of the kids are starting to get some confidence back,” Parra said. “(Greenwood) could’ve shot in the 30s. He was kind of disappointed with a couple of double bogeys.

“I like the way Joey Amaral has been playing,” Parra said of the sophomore who scored a 56 in 13 holes in Monday’s Tri-County Athletic League tournament at Corral de Tiera. “He shot well on Monday, he was our only kid in the 50s. I told the kids today we need to be somewhere around 43, and he shot 43. He’s probably been our most consistent player.”

Rounding out the scores for San Benito were Chad Stanger, who scored a 45. Nolan Filice shot 48 and Robbie Sanchez shot 49.

For Greenwood, a sophomore, the hope is a strong round such as Thursday’s might propel him to success against the league competition.

“He’s been working really hard and really wanting to play well and he’s improving,” Parra said. “I think today’s round might be a confidence booster. Monday (the ‘Balers next TCAL tournament at Salinas Country Club) might be a big challenge because he knows he can play better.”

Filice, another sophomore, is also beginning to impress Parra.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him develop,” Parra said. “He’s starting to gain some confidence.”

While the ‘Balers have struggled a bit in league play – finishing third and fourth in the first two league tournaments, respectively – Parra is hoping this match will give the team some confidence.

“I think even the kids want a little bit more,” Parra said. “It was nice to get the win, but they expect more from themselves. It was positive in the fact that we did get the win, but we also know that we can do better.”
