Maybe the San Benito High boys soccer team should play more
back-to-back games on the road.
The Haybalers shut out Saratoga 4-0 Tuesday and then bettered
Seaside 3-0 Wednesday.
The bench played a key role in the win. Junior Sergio Lostanau
filled in as midfielder for his older brother Ernesto Lostanau.
Ernesto slid back to the defense to replace senior Willie Sanchez,
who was out with a red card.
Maybe the San Benito High boys soccer team should play more back-to-back games on the road.
The Haybalers shut out Saratoga 4-0 Tuesday and then bettered Seaside 3-0 Wednesday.
The bench played a key role in the win. Junior Sergio Lostanau filled in as midfielder for his older brother Ernesto Lostanau. Ernesto slid back to the defense to replace senior Willie Sanchez, who was out with a red card.
Senior Valentin Bribiescas played center forward in the absence of the injured Jamie Torres.
The Balers (2-2) played a strong two-touch passing game and moved the ball quickly into the forward attack area time and again.
Jonathan Alonso opened the scoring in the first half after a nice run by Jesus Ramos on the left side. Alfonso tucked it under the goalie into the right corner of the net.
Alonso started many attacks for the Balers, who challenged every ball and made it difficult for Seaside to cross midfield.
The reworked defense, bruised and battered from the Saratoga game, constantly applied pressure. But the score was just 1-0 at the half.
In the second half, sophomore Randell Lopez came in to give Alonso a breather. He worked with Alfredo Arredondo to drive the ball down the left half and create a number of good scoring chances.
Jorge Lopez played a long ball to the charging Sergio Lostanau, who placed it in the net for a 2-0 lead.
Seaside mounted a late attack, but was brushed aside by the outstanding play of senior keeper Jorge Medina, who made spectacular stops on three consecutive corner kicks.
Arredondo scored his first goal of the year on a blast from a direct kick on the right side just outside the penalty area. It soared into the net before the Seaside keeper could move to the post.
Defenders Jose Sanchez, Gilbert Bailon, Ernesto Lostanau and Martin Medina did the rest to close out the game and preserve the shutout.
JV Note: The Baler JVs (2-1-1) started out strong Wednesday night against Seaside but had to settle for a 3-3 tie.
Seaside scored in the first ten minutes of the game, but the Balers came up with shot after shot, just missing their target.
In the 27th minute of play, Joel Aguilar put a ball into the back of the net, Just two minutes later, Miguel Guzman played a ball off a couple of ricochets and past a diving Seaside goalie. The Balers were up 2-1 at half.
Just eight minutes into the second half, Aguilar put in his second goal of the night to extend the lead.
A questionable hand ball in the box led to a quick Seaside score on a penalty kick. And then with just 75 seconds remaining, Seaside sneaked one past the defense and into the net to pull out a tie.
